Your recruiter has seen it all. The good contracts, the bad contracts, the travelers who thrive, and the ones who make the same avoidable mistakes over and over again. And while they can’t always say it out loud (professionalism and all that), there are things they really wish you knew.
We asked the recruiting team at Junxion Med Staffing to get honest about what they wish every traveler understood before their next contract. No sugar-coating. Just real talk from people who genuinely want you to succeed.
We Can’t Help You If You Ghost Us
Recruiters get it, you’re busy. You’re working 12-hour shifts, dealing with housing logistics, and trying to have a life outside the hospital. But when your recruiter reaches out about a contract detail, a compliance deadline, or a start date change, they need you to respond.
Going silent for days puts your assignment at risk. Facilities don’t wait around. If credentialing paperwork isn’t submitted on time or a schedule confirmation goes unanswered, the facility might pull the offer and give it to someone else.
You don’t need to be glued to your phone. But a quick text back, even a thumbs up, goes a long way. Communication is a two-way street, and the travelers who stay responsive tend to get the best assignments. It’s just how it works.

The Highest-Paying Contract Isn’t Always the Best One
We know this sounds counterintuitive. But hear us out. Sometimes the contract paying more per week is at a facility with terrible management, unsafe staffing ratios, or a history of canceling travelers mid-contract. And sometimes the contract that pays slightly less is at a facility with an amazing team, solid orientation, and a track record of extending travelers.
Your recruiter knows the backstory on a lot of these facilities. They’ve heard feedback from other travelers who’ve been there. When they steer you toward one contract over another, it’s usually not because of commission, it’s because they’ve seen how it plays out and they’re trying to save you a headache.
Ask your recruiter about facility culture, not just pay. Questions like what do other travelers say about this place are gold. A great recruiter will give you the honest answer.
Your Profile Is Your First Impression
Facilities review traveler profiles before they offer interviews. If your resume has gaps, typos, or outdated information, it’s working against you. If your skills checklist isn’t filled out, the facility might pass you over for someone who took the time to complete theirs.
Your recruiter can help you polish your profile, but they need a solid foundation to work with. Keep your certifications current. Update your skills checklist after every assignment. Add any new competencies or equipment you’ve worked with. Think of it like your clinical portfolio, the more detailed and current it is, the more competitive you are.
This matters especially for specialized roles like Cath Lab Tech, Echo Tech, or CT Technologist where facilities want proof of specific equipment experience.
We Fight for Your Pay, But We Need Ammo
Good recruiters negotiate on your behalf. But they can only push so hard if you don’t give them leverage. If you’ve got certifications in a hot specialty, years of experience at Level 1 trauma centers, or flexibility on start dates and locations, tell your recruiter all of it.
The more your recruiter knows about your strengths, the better they can position you to the facility and justify a higher bill rate. Which means a better pay package for you.
For context, ICU travel nurses are averaging ,289/week right now, with top contracts pushing ,800. But those top numbers don’t just fall into your lap, they go to travelers who present well and have recruiters who know how to advocate for them.

Starting Early Makes Everything Easier
The best time to start looking for your next contract is 4-6 weeks before your current one ends. The second-best time is right now.
When you wait until the last minute, you limit your options. The high-paying contracts in desirable locations? Those get snapped up early. The travelers who plan ahead get first dibs. The ones who scramble at the last second take whatever’s left.
Your recruiter would love to have a pipeline conversation with you mid-contract. Where do you want to go next? What specialty interests you? What’s your ideal start date? Having this conversation early means your recruiter can line up opportunities before they hit the general market. It’s a huge advantage that a lot of travelers don’t use.
We Actually Care, Seriously
The best recruiters in this industry aren’t in it for the transaction. They’re in it because they genuinely enjoy helping people build careers they’re excited about. At Junxion, our team is small on purpose. That means your recruiter actually knows your name, your preferences, your deal-breakers, and your goals.
We were founded by someone who lived the travel healthcare life and got frustrated with agencies that treated travelers like replaceable parts. That founding frustration is built into everything we do, from how we structure pay packages to how we match you with assignments to how we show up when things go sideways.
If you’re exploring your first assignment or your fifteenth, If you’re a OR nurse or a Sterile Processing Tech, we’d genuinely love to hear from you. Not to pitch you. Just to talk about what you’re looking for and see if we’re the right fit.

How to Be a Recruiter’s Favorite Candidate
Recruiters work with dozens of travelers at any given time, and the ones who get the best contracts are the ones who make the process easy. That does not mean being low-maintenance — it means being responsive, organized, and clear about what you want. Answer your recruiter’s texts within a few hours. Keep your compliance documents current and in one place. Be honest about your deal-breakers instead of saying yes to everything and backing out later. When a hot contract drops, your recruiter will call the traveler they trust to respond fast and follow through. Be that person, and you will always have options.
