Travel healthcare pay maximization starts with understanding every component of your compensation package — not just the hourly rate.
As a travel nurse or allied traveler, you have a unique way of getting paid. Starting out, it can be confusing. Understanding your pay package is essential — if you don’t understand it, how can you know whether you can take an assignment and still make money?
Before we get into it, here is a video that covers a lot of what I am going to explain below. It is from a few years ago, but all the information still applies. It is geared toward traveling surgical tech rates, but everything transfers to traveling nurses and other allied specialties too.
Being a traveling nurse or allied healthcare professional means you qualify for two different types of wages.
This topic is part of why Junxion Med was started. I will keep it short.
On my first assignment in Columbus, Ohio as a traveling Surgical Tech, I started alongside three other travelers who all had experience. One day we started talking about pay. It turned out they were all making $200 more per week than I was — and we had the same agency and the same recruiter.
That was a terrible feeling. Our goal at Junxion is to make sure that never happens to our travelers.
Rates do fluctuate — sometimes week by week, sometimes day by day. But our goal is to get you paid as much as possible upfront, so you never feel like you have to fight for what you are worth.
I once had a traveler refuse to work with us because we would not negotiate. That was after she told us we were already the highest-paying agency for that assignment. In my opinion, travelers should not have to negotiate — agencies should lead with their best offer.
We start with the minimum taxable wage for your profession. Then we look at the GSA calculation for the metro area and time of year. Everything left goes into tax-free stipends. It is the best way to structure pay for wherever you are headed.
Example for a 40-hour assignment:
You can use GSA.gov to find the max stipend rate for any area. Keep in mind — this is the maximum. What the facility actually pays may mean you cannot fully max out your stipends. But if the bill rate allows it, that is a win.
It is also worth knowing that pay packages vary a lot between facilities. Here are the main factors they consider:
Choosing where you take an assignment is one of the most important decisions you will make as a traveler. Cost of living matters — a lot.
I get it. As a former traveler, I wanted to be in the cool cities too. But realistically, how often are you actually going out? Maybe one or two days a week. If you take an assignment 1.5 to 3 hours from where you really want to be, you will usually make more money because the cost of living is lower.
That said, exploring the country is part of why we travel. It is a real tradeoff, and it comes down to one question: why did you start traveling?
Tip: Start looking for housing before you even submit to an assignment. You do not want to get the call, get excited, and then turn it down because housing eats up everything you would make.
Here are some of my go-to places to find housing. As a traveler, I would strongly consider shared housing — it is how I kept a lot more money compared to renting an entire place to myself.
You will be surprised what opens up when you stay flexible and build a real relationship with your recruiter. We are here to be a partner in your career — not just fill a slot.
My favorite assignment was in Odessa, TX. Honestly, there is not a lot out there. But the people were great, the food was terrific, and I ended up staying a full year. The airport there connected to almost anywhere I wanted to fly.
The more open you are to location, the less stressed you will be — and the more you will actually enjoy the travel life.
